We believe everyone should have a safe and quality experience in, on and around water. In the UK over 250 people died in accidental drownings in 2020 with more fatalities inland than around the coast. Many of these drowning were avoidable.

When drowning is recognised as an issue, when places are less dangerous, when people behave safely, and when people are supervised and rescued if needed fewer will drown.

The Black Swimming Association (BSA) & the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) have joined forces to help ensure visibility and equal access to water safety messaging and education for everyone, with a particular focus on people of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage. 95% of Black adults and 80% of Black children in England do not swim. 93% of Asian adults and 78% of Asian children in England do not swim. And less than 2% of lifeguards in the UK identify as being of African, Caribbean or Asian heritage.

We have an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to influence pioneering interventions and lead on our shared BSA/RNLI objectives to deliver an innovative programme of work across the UK and Ireland with a clear focus on African, Caribbean and Asian communities. Leading a team to design and deliver, through partners, ground-breaking lifesaving interventions to help reduce the impact of drowning where the burden is greatest, this role will be instrumental in changing a narrative and in saving lives. The successful candidate will therefore need to be able to effectively engage and work with ethnically diverse communities to have a good understanding of some of the issues that they face.

There will be some travel required as part of this role.

This is a temporary 2 year fixed term contract.

Safeguarding

The RNLI is committed to safeguarding; ensuring the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk.  We expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment and have a zero tolerance approach to proven incidents of bullying, abuse, harassment  or exploitation.  The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role. (England & Wales; DBS check, Scotland; Disclosure Scotland PVG, Northern Ireland; Access NI, Republic of Ireland; Garda Vetting; International, International Child Protection Certificate process).

Diversity at the RNLI

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards Our Vision: To save every one.
